“Should I get Botox or filler?”
It’s one of the most common questions in aesthetic medicine, and the answer depends largely on what you’re trying to change.
Botox and dermal fillers are not interchangeable treatments.
They work differently and address different aesthetic concerns.
A quick note on names: “Botox” is often used as shorthand for any wrinkle-relaxing injection. At Naples Laser & Skin Aesthetics, our physician uses Daxxify® and Dysport®, two FDA-approved neuromodulators that work the same way.
Botulinum toxin products temporarily reduce muscle activity.
The FDA has approved certain botulinum toxin products for temporary improvement in the appearance of specific facial lines, including forehead lines, frown lines and crow’s feet.
In simple terms:
Botox addresses movement-related lines.
Dermal fillers are injectable products used for specific facial indications involving wrinkles, folds and volume enhancement.
Depending on the product and its FDA-approved indications, fillers may be used to enhance areas such as the lips, cheeks or chin or improve certain facial folds. At our clinic, we use Restylane®-L and Radiesse® (+), as well as Sculptra® for gradual, collagen-building volume.
In simple terms:
Filler addresses volume and contour.
If your concern is:
“I see a line when I move my forehead.”
A neuromodulator may be considered.
If your concern is:
“I’ve lost volume in my cheeks.”
A filler may potentially be considered.
If your concern is:
“My skin texture has changed.”
Neither Botox nor filler may be the primary solution. You may need a skin-focused treatment instead, such as ClearLift, microneedling or a chemical peel.
Some patients may have both dynamic wrinkles and volume changes.
In those cases, different treatments may be considered as part of a comprehensive plan.
However, every injectable procedure carries risks and requires appropriate patient selection and technique. The FDA specifically recommends working with a licensed healthcare provider who is experienced with dermal fillers and understands facial anatomy and complication management.
One of our favorite principles in aesthetic medicine is:
You don’t necessarily need more. You may simply need the right treatment in the right place.
For women over 40, preserving facial character can be especially important.
The objective should be to create a refreshed appearance, not erase the features that make you look like yourself.
Lip filler can enhance fullness and contour in appropriate candidates.
But lip filler is not automatically the answer to every concern around the mouth.
Sometimes the issue is:
A consultation helps determine what is actually contributing to the concern.
Dermal filler is a medical procedure, not simply a beauty treatment.
Common temporary reactions include swelling, redness, bruising and tenderness. Rare but serious complications can occur if filler unintentionally enters a blood vessel.
This makes provider training, product selection and emergency preparedness important considerations.
There isn’t a universal answer.
The right starting point is identifying your concern.
And sometimes the best answer is not treating the area at all.
If you’re considering a wrinkle relaxer or dermal fillers in Naples, FL, schedule a consultation at Naples Laser & Skin Aesthetics to discuss your goals and determine which options may be appropriate.
